If spas adapt their business models (from one that is purely profit orientated to one that is more focused on client benefit) and tap into new markets and look beyond the stereotypical ‘luxury’ client profile, the current epidemic of childhood obesity may be a new business opportunity for our industry. Seizing this opportunity will also show the capacity of our industry to be more innovative and imaginative in our service offering and ability to explore new customer segments.

Facing reality

For the first time in the history of mankind, we as a modern society are facing the scenario where our children, the future generation, might live less than the previous generation. One of the main reasons behind this dramatic forecast is obesity.

In countries like the United States, Canada and Spain, obesity has become an epidemic problem that poses a real threat to general wellbeing of these societies. According to the Journal of the American Association, the main causes of obesity (poor diet and physical inactivity) could overtake tobacco as the leading cause of preventable health in the US.

The problem in the US is particularly serious. At the Health Matters Conference, former President Bill Clinton said that childhood obesity is “the number one public health problem” in the country right now, a dramatic fact that the President linked with the “way we live, the way we organise, and distribute food and consume it”.

In Spain, “30% of teenagers are overweight,” an alarming figure that places this country just behind the US and Scotland regarding obesity. Additional findings confirmed the lack of exercise as a leading cause in this scenario with nearly 40% of youths (13-18) who never practice any sport.

The physical problems associated with obesity are vast. According to the site Stop-Childhood-Obesity.com, “overweight children and adolescents are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes) than are other children and adolescents”.

The price to pay

Apart from the obvious health-related risks, obesity also poses a serious financial problem to nations worldwide. In the US alone, the government has spent US$150 billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses – a significant burden on the national healthcare system.

Similarly, the Spanish Government spends nearly €2.5 billion a year on obesity-related treatments. If nothing is done at the preventive level, these costs will increase as “overweight people are more likely to develop diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer”.

The current reactive model of national healthcare systems cannot cope with their ever increasing ageing population’s needs today, let alone these additional costs of the future generation who are supposed to “support” the country and be an integral part in shaping the future economy. Taking into consideration the above mentioned issues, there is a health, social and economic problem that needs to be addressed, and quick.

Fighting childhood obesity

There are several projects that have been implemented to deal with this dramatic environment. For instance, First Lady Michelle Obama is leading the project ‘Let’s Move,’ an ambitious initiative aimed at tackling childhood obesity in the United States that counts with the support of the Federal Government. One of the most interesting aspects of this initiative is its comprehensive approach, which brings together different actors including an active participation of parents and schools.

Along those lines, there is a positive increase of community and grass-roots initiatives targeting childhood obesity. ChOOSE HEALTH (Childhood Obesity Overcome by Sleep Education, Healthy Eating, and Aerobically Loving The Heart), an organisation created by high-school student Anita Rao in Texas is just one of the many projects aimed at promoting education about obesity and a healthy living within the school system.

During her speech at the Health Matters Conference, Anita Rao stated that obesity was not only produced by a poor diet and a lack of exercise but also it was the result of bad sleep habits. She also mentioned that her efforts were having an impact thanks to the support of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and tools such as the Healthy Schools Program.

The positive impact of this programme was also highlighted by Dr. Dwayne Proctor, Senior Program Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, who referred to it as “one of the most successful investments in schools thus far”. Dr. Proctor also shared some positive news regarding the decrease of obesity in states like California and New York thanks to the different initiatives that have been already implemented to fight childhood obesity in the US.

How can spas get involved?

In order to tackle obesity in an effective way, a comprehensive approach based on prevention must be in place. This approach allows different actors in our society, including the spa industry, to embrace the opportunity to make a significant contribution to this shift in health paradigm.

If our industry is to make an impact, spas would need to revisit their business models and service offerings and ‘repack’ them into a more preventive model. By joining forces with other fields (such as nutrition, fitness, and more), collectively our services would help fight this battle.

Spas could also get involved with schools and parents, thus taking on a more educational role and empowering children to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. If all these synergies are built in a positive and strategic way, the spa industry can take advantage of a new business opportunity as well as help build a healthier future.

Por primera vez en la historia de la humanidad, como sociedad moderna nos enfrentamos a un problema importante en donde nuestros hijos, la generación del futuro, podría vivir menos que la generación anterior. Una de las razones principales detrás de esta dramática previsión es la obesidad infantil.

En países como los Estados Unidos, Canadá y España, la obesidad se ha convertido en un problema epidémico que representa una verdadera amenaza para el bienestar general de dichas sociedades. De acuerdo con el Journal of the American Association, las principales causas de la obesidad (mala alimentación e inactividad física) pueden superar al tabaco como la principal causa prevenible de la salud en los Estados Unidos.

El problema en los Estados Unidos es particularmente grave. En la Health Matters Conference, el ex presidente Bill Clinton dijo que la obesidad infantil es “el principal problema de salud pública” en el país en este momento, un hecho dramático que el ex Presidente vinculó con “la forma en que vivimos, y la manera en que organizamos, distribuimos y consumimos los alimentos”.

Según el sitio Stop-Childhood-Obesity.com, “los niños y adolescentes con sobrepeso son más propensos a tener factores de riesgo asociados con enfermedades cardiovasculares (tales como presión arterial alta, colesterol alto y diabetes de tipo 2) que otros niños y adolescentes”.

El precio a pagar

Además de todas las implicaciones relacionadas con la salud, la obesidad también plantea un grave problema financiero a los gobiernos nacionales de todo el mundo. En los Estados Unidos, el gobierno gasta US$150 billones al año en tratamiento de enfermedades relacionadas con la obesidad, lo cual representa una cantidad significativa dentro de la carga sanitaria global que actualmente afecta los salarios de la clase media estadounidense.

Del mismo modo, el Gobierno español gasta cerca de €2.5 billones al año en tratamientos relacionados con la obesidad. Si no se hace nada a nivel preventivo, los costos aumentarán debido a que “las personas con sobrepeso son más propensas a desarrollar enfermedades como la diabetes, patologías cardiovasculares y cáncer”.

Hoy por hoy, el actual modelo reactivo de los sistemas nacionales de salud no está en grado de absorber las necesidades de una población anciana creciente, por no hablar de estos costos adicionales que produce una generación futura que en teoría debería “ayudar” al país y ser una parte integral de la economía del futuro. Teniendo en cuenta todos estos aspectos, existe un problema de salud, social y económico que debe ser enfrentado de manera rápida.

La lucha contra la obesidad infantil

Varios proyectos han sido implementados para hacer frente a este dramático entorno. A este respecto, la Primera Dama Michelle Obama está liderando el proyecto ‘Let’s Move’, una ambiciosa iniciativa destinada a la lucha contra la obesidad infantil en los Estados Unidos que cuenta con el apoyo del Gobierno Federal. Con el fin de que nuestra industria pueda lograr un impacto en este campo, los spas deben revisar sus modelos de negocios y ofertas de servicios para que puedan ‘revestirlos’ de un papel más preventivo. También es importante unir fuerzas con otros sectores (nutrición, salud, etc.) y ver el modo en que juntos nuestros servicios pueden ayudar a combatir esta batalla.

A Dramatic Scenario

A recent article written by Jane Croft on the Financial Times (NHS urged to improve obesity services) provides a good picture of the dramatic situation regarding obesity in the UK. According to it, “the UK has the second-highest prevalence of obesity in the world, with a quarter of all adults classed as obese, costing the NHS about £ 5 billion a year.”

The article, which is based on the Action on Obesity report elaborated by the Royal College of Physicians, highlights the problem with an irony that affects the NHS itself. In fact, out of the 70,000 NHS employees who are obese, only 15% seek medical advice on this. Along those lines, the report describes as “inadequate” the existing training for health services staff.

Just like all the countries that face this epidemic, childhood obesity is particularly serious in the UK. According to the article, “among 10- to 11- year olds in the UK, 17 per cent of girls and 20 per cent of boys are obese.” In practical terms, there is not a single healthcare system in the world that can cope for too long with a similar human and financial burden.

A Structural Obstacle

There are several factors that have increased the negative impact of the current epidemic. However, one of the biggest variables is the lack of capacity to acknowledge the problem. In fact, obesity has never been considered a serious issue. All the contrary, this problem has been very often overlooked by healthcare systems all around the world.

This institutional ‘indifference’ towards obesity has much to do with the prevailing reactive approach towards health that still exists among healthcare systems around the world. By waiting for people to develop chronic diseases before they get treated, healthcare systems have neglected the role that prevention plays in the control of obesity.

Actions To Take

In spite of the structural obstacle we just mentioned, the need for change is challenging traditional ways of doing things. We are facing a dramatic scenario that requires new and comprehensive approaches based on prevention, innovation and cross-collaboration.

Jane Croft highlights the imperative of improving obesity services in the UK. Some of the channels to accomplish that goal include things like creating multidisciplinary teams to cover severe and complex obesity all over the country, assigning each NHS with a lead doctor focusing on obesity, appointing a public official to coordinate obesity strategies, and improving training and education for doctors and health staff.

As per our previous post on childhood obesity, we are convinced spas and wellness centres can play a huge role in the elaboration of prevention-based strategies aimed at tackling obesity. We have the opportunity to rebrand ourselves as valuable providers of solutions based on prevention, wellness and healthy lifestyles. En términos prácticos, no existe ningún sistema de salud en el mundo capaz de sostener por mucho tiempo semejante carga humana y financiera.

Un obstáculo estructural
