In different occasions, we have discussed the current crisis of national healthcare systems around the world. While talking about this, we have also argued in favour of a new approach towards health based on prevention and innovation.<\/p>\n

In the following four posts, we are going to bring these issues together by talking about the benefits that innovative design can provide to healthcare. We believe this series provides a good opportunity for the spa and wellness industries to increase their awareness of the ongoing challenges and opportunities the market currently offers.<\/p>\n

En diferentes ocasiones, hemos hablado acerca de la crisis actual de los sistemas nacionales de salud en todo el mundo. Al hacerlo, hemos tambi\u00e9n expresado nuestra voz a favor de un nuevo enfoque hacia la salud basado en la prevenci\u00f3n y la innovaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

En los siguientes cuatro art\u00edculos, vamos a tratar estos temas en conjunto habando sobre los beneficios que un dise\u00f1o innovador puede ofrecer a la asistencia sanitaria. Philips Design<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Our series of posts has been shaped around a recent paper published by Lekshmy Parameswaran and Jeroen Raijmakers entitled People-focused Innovation in Healthcare. This paper focuses on the innovative channels that Philips Design, one of the largest design organisations in the world, has been using to implement effective solutions for today’s changing healthcare system.<\/p>\n

In our upcoming posts, we will take a closer look at these solutions. For now, we will start this discussion with a preview of the complexity of the world we live in and the current crisis of healthcare systems across the globe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unhealthy Lifestyles<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>To a certain extent, the crisis of healthcare systems is a consequence of the dramatic changes we are witnessing nowadays. We live in a world where the disintegration of social structures and the loss of power from traditional institutions have created an unpredictable future.<\/p>\n

In front of this uncertainty, we have found in technology a source of comfort that has also empowered our expectations for getting ‘quick-fix’ solutions in any field of our life. However, technology is also a force that is playing against us today. As stated by Parameswaran and Raijmakers, “technology might liberate us through timesaving solutions, but our bodies are beginning to show signs of the stresses and strains of such a lifestyle”.<\/p>\n

Today, the real problem relies in the fact that we are trying to adapt ourselves to a hectic environment without a clear idea of our priorities, something that affects the way we care for ourselves. This is why we are adopting an unhealthy lifestyle defined by overconsumption, poor diet, lack of physical exercise, insufficient sleep and lots of stress.<\/p>\n

The economic and human impact of unhealthy lifestyles is evident. In a 2004 IHC report, healthcare consultant Paul Roberts stated that “an estimated 13.4 million working days a year in the UK are lost to stress, anxiety and depression, and 12.3 million to back and upper limb problems”. In addition to these kinds of issues, we are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases as we get older. This alarming situation plays a major role in the current crisis of our healthcare systems.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Breaking Point<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>According to Parameswaran and Raijmakers, our healthcare systems are now at a breaking point. As the population grows larger and people continue to develop chronic diseases, our healthcare systems won’t be able to cope with the increasing demand and costs of services.<\/p>\n

Even worse, healthcare providers compete in a way that they shift costs to one another limiting the services they offer. A kind of competition that, according to Michael E. Porter and Elizabeth Olmsted Tesiberg, authors of the book Redefining Healthcare, “does not create value\u00a0for patients, but erodes quality, fosters inefficiency, creates excess capacity and drives up administrative costs”.<\/p>\n

Likewise, hospitals continue to struggle for revenue while heavily competing with other actors of the healthcare landscape and adjusting to tougher financial and legal constraints. All this produces a fragmented healthcare environment where very often people feel anxious about their most important health-related decisions.<\/p>\n

In the middle of this crisis, the spa and wellness industries have shown their interest to join the health field. In order to do this right, it is important to understand first the nature of the healthcare problem. We believe the picture we described above is a good way to start a discussion about the innovative options that can be used to deal with the current crisis. In the upcoming posts we will further explore this in detail.<\/p>\n

Philips Design<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Nuestra serie de art\u00edculos se ha dise\u00f1ado en torno a un reciente documento publicado por Lekshmy Parameswaran y Raijmakers Jeroen titulado People-focused Innovation in Healthcare<\/em>. Este documento se centra en los canales innovadores que Philips Design, una de las mayores organizaciones de dise\u00f1o en el mundo, ha estado utilizando para poner en pr\u00e1ctica soluciones efectivas con las cuales enfrentar el cambiante sistema sanitario.<\/p>\n

En los siguientes art\u00edculos, vamos a echar un vistazo m\u00e1s de cerca a estas soluciones. Por el momento, vamos a comenzar esta discusi\u00f3n con una introducci\u00f3n sobre la complejidad del mundo en el cual vivimos y la actual crisis de los sistemas sanitarios alrededor del mundo.<\/p>\n

Estilos de vida poco saludables<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Hasta cierto punto, la crisis de los sistemas de salud es consecuencia de los dram\u00e1ticos cambios que estamos presenciando hoy en d\u00eda. Vivimos en un mundo en donde la desintegraci\u00f3n de estructuras sociales y la p\u00e9rdida de poder de las instituciones tradicionales han creado un futuro impredecible.<\/p>\n

Frente a esta incertidumbre, hemos encontrado en la tecnolog\u00eda una fuente de consuelo que ha tambi\u00e9n reforzado nuestras expectativas de conseguir soluciones ‘r\u00e1pidas’ en cualquier \u00e1mbito de nuestra vida. Sin embargo, la tecnolog\u00eda es tambi\u00e9n una fuerza que est\u00e1 jugando en contra de nosotros hoy en d\u00eda. Tal y como lo se\u00f1alan Parameswaran y Raijmakers, “la tecnolog\u00eda nos puede hacer m\u00e1s libres a trav\u00e9s de soluciones en donde se ahorra tiempo, sin embargo, nuestros cuerpos est\u00e1n empezando a mostrar signos del estr\u00e9s y tensiones que se derivan de dicho estilo de vida”.<\/p>\n

Hoy en d\u00eda, el problema real se basa en el hecho de que estamos tratando de adaptarnos a un entorno agitado sin tener una idea clara sobre nuestras prioridades, lo cual tambi\u00e9n afecta la forma en que cuidamos de nosotros mismos. Es por ello que estamos adoptando un estilo de vida poco saludable que se define por el consumo excesivo, la mala alimentaci\u00f3n, la falta de ejercicio f\u00edsico y sue\u00f1o y una gran cantidad de estr\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

El impacto econ\u00f3mico y humano de estos estilos de vida poco saludables es evidente. En un informe del IHC del 2004, el consultor en atenci\u00f3n sanitaria Paul Roberts estim\u00f3 que “en el Reino Unido se pierden 13.4 millones de d\u00edas laborables al a\u00f1o por culpa del estr\u00e9s, la ansiedad y la depresi\u00f3n, y 12.3 millones por problemas de la espalda y las extremidades superiores”. Adem\u00e1s de este tipo de cuestiones, somos m\u00e1s propensos a sufrir de enfermedades cr\u00f3nicas a medida que envejecemos. Esta alarmante situaci\u00f3n juega un papel importante en la crisis actual de nuestros sistemas de salud.<\/p>\n

Al borde del colapso<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>De acuerdo con Parameswaran y Raijmakers, nuestros sistemas de salud se encuentran hoy en d\u00eda al borde del colapso. Con el aumento de la poblaci\u00f3n y una continua tendencia entre la gente a desarrollar enfermedades cr\u00f3nicas, nuestros sistemas de salud no ser\u00e1n capaces de hacer frente a la creciente demanda y costos de los servicios.<\/p>\n

Todav\u00eda peor, los proveedores de salud compiten de tal forma que transfieren los costos de uno a otro limitando los servicios que ofrecen. Una especie de competencia que seg\u00fan Michael E. Porter y Elizabeth Olmsted Tesiberg, autores del libro Redefining Healthcare<\/em>, “no crea valor para los pacientes sino que erosiona la calidad, fomenta la ineficiencia, crea exceso de capacidad y aumenta los costos administrativos”.<\/p>\n

Del mismo modo, los hospitales siguen luchando por obtener ingresos mientras siguen compitiendo fuertemente con otros actores del sector sanitario y tratan de ajustarse a estrictas restricciones financieras y legales. Todo esto produce un ambiente de salud fragmentado en el que muy a menudo las personas se sienten ansiosas con respecto a sus decisiones m\u00e1s importantes en materia de salud.<\/p>\n

En medio de esta crisis, las industrias de spa y wellness han mostrado su inter\u00e9s por unirse al campo de la salud. Con el fin de hacer esto bien, es importante entender primero la naturaleza del problema de la salud. Creemos que el cuadro que hemos descrito en este art\u00edculo sea una buena manera de comenzar una discusi\u00f3n acerca de las opciones innovadoras que se pueden utilizar para hacer frente a la crisis actual.
