Although we firmly believe this is a promising business opportunity, and one we should definitely try to embrace as an industry, we also know the construction of those synergies is subject to a series of obstacles and different mindsets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In spite of the current crisis of healthcare systems around the world and the potential benefits that innovative and preventive models can provide to the health industry as a whole, several actors in the health field are not still seduced by the idea of changing the traditional ways in which healthcare is delivered to people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--:--><!--:es--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">En este blog hemos hablado ampliamente sobre los potenciales beneficios que los spas y centros de wellness pueden obtener de la creaci\u00f3n de diversas sinerg\u00edas dentro de la industria de la salud. Aunque creemos firmemente que esta es una oportunidad de negocios prometedora, y una que definitivamente deber\u00edamos tratar de abrazar como industria, tambi\u00e9n sabemos que la construcci\u00f3n de dichas sinergias est\u00e1 sujeta a una serie de obst\u00e1culos y formas de pensar diferentes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A pesar de la actual crisis de los sistemas sanitarios del mundo y los potenciales beneficios que la industria de la salud podr\u00eda percibir de modelos innovadores y preventivos, son varios los actores en el campo de la salud que todav\u00eda no se han dejado seducir por la idea de cambiar las formas tradicionales en que se le da a la gente el suministro de asistencia sanitaria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--:--><!--more--><!--:en--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Conventional Views and Economic Interests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just recently,<a title=\"Spa Business\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spabusiness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Spa Business<\/a> Blog editor Liz Terry wrote an interesting piece entitled The Wellness Challenge. As the title suggests, Terry touches various issues regarding the main obstacles that our industry faces today in terms of getting involved with the health industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Her article, which is based on the things she heard at the last <a title=\"TEDMED\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tedmed.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TEDMED<\/a> conference in Washington DC, offers mixed conclusions. On the negative side, Terry was shocked to realize that several actors in the healthcare field still favour their economic interests and traditional views over things like prevention and helping people to change their lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As stated by Terry, &#8220;for drug companies and some parts of the medical profession, it appears that the optimal outcome is large numbers of people who are well enough to stay alive for long periods of time, but sick enough to need constant medication, so they&#8217;re effectively being farmed for profit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As a result, Terry argues that the wellness industry is in competition with conventional medicine. Although this is probably the biggest obstacle the spa and wellness industries need to overcome, Terry also highlights in her article the different speakers who challenged that conventionalism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Cure vs. Prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the TEDMED speakers who challenged conventional views was Sandeep Kishore, a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School. According to Kishore, the current conventionalism has been produced by a linear division between the medical and the public health worlds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just like 100 years ago, today&#8217;s medical schools are still pushing the idea that curing sick people is the best way to measure a successful medical treatment. This academic foundation, as well as the economic interests we mentioned before, are responsible for establishing the prevailing reactive models that define healthcare systems around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unfortunately, this approach to health has been responsible for bringing healthcare systems to their knees. The financial and human burden has become unsustainable, and that is precisely why prevention is gaining force in the last years. In spite of the fact that prevention appears as the common sense alternative to tackle the current crisis, conventional wisdom still favours cure over prevention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Changing Lifestyles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the most interesting facts presented by Sandeep Kishore was related to life expectancy. A related slide stated that &#8220;of the 30+ years gained in life expectancy in the past century in the USA, 5 years are due to medical care.&#8221; The remaining 25+ years are explained by an improvement on social things like sanitation, hygiene, and what he referred to as &#8220;the causes of the causes.&#8221; In other words, our general well-being will be mostly affected by changing our lifestyles rather than by developing new drugs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Along those lines, other speakers supported the idea of making a clear distinction between conditions that are preventable and those that require advance medical treatments such as surgery and drug therapies. Ivan Oranski, M.D. and Executive Director of Reuters Health, warned about the danger posed by overtreatment and labeling too many patients with subclinical illnesses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>A Tough Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When you are dealing with something like changing traditional views of doing things, you know you are in front of a big challenge. If we add strong economic interests favouring those views, we know the spa and wellness industries will need to work hard in order to step into the health field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In spite of this tough challenge, the TEDMED conference and other recently held forums around the world are a good indication that there is an increasing dialogue within the health industry regarding the need of changing things around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Liz Terry thinks we should focus on building alliances with different actors of the health industry and create common goals alongside them. Por el lado negativo, Terry fue sorprendida al darse cuenta que varios actores en el campo de la salud todav\u00eda favorecen sus intereses econ\u00f3micos y puntos de vista tradicionales por encima de cosas como la prevenci\u00f3n y ayudar a la gente a cambiar sus estilos de vida.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tal y como Terry lo se\u00f1ala, &#8220;para las compa\u00f1\u00edas farmac\u00e9uticas y algunas partes de la profesi\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, pareciera que el resultado \u00f3ptimo fuera el de lograr un gran n\u00famero de personas que est\u00e1n lo suficientemente bien como para mantenerse con vida durante largos periodos de tiempo, pero lo suficientemente enfermas como para necesitar cuidado m\u00e9dico constante alimentando de esta forma una poblaci\u00f3n adapta a los fines de lucro del sector&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Como resultado de ello, Terry sostiene que la industria del wellness est\u00e1 en competencia con la medicina convencional. Esta base acad\u00e9mica, as\u00ed como los intereses econ\u00f3micos que hemos mencionado antes, son responsables de haber establecido los preponderantes modelos reactivos que definen los sistemas sanitarios de todo el mundo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Por desgracia, este enfoque de la salud ha sido responsable de llevar los sistemas de salud a sus rodillas. La carga financiera y humana se ha vuelto insostenible y gracias a ello la prevenci\u00f3n ha venido ganando fuerza en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os. A pesar del hecho de que la prevenci\u00f3n se presenta como una alternativa de sentido com\u00fan para enfrentar la actual crisis, la sabidur\u00eda convencional sigue favoreciendo la curaci\u00f3n por encima de la prevenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Cambiando estilos de vida<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Uno de los hechos m\u00e1s interesantes presentados por Sandeep Kishore en TEDMED se relacion\u00f3 con la esperanza de vida. A este respecto, una diapositiva relacionada afirm\u00f3 que &#8220;de los m\u00e1s de 30 a\u00f1os ganados en esperanza de vida en el siglo pasado en los EE.UU., 5 a\u00f1os se deben a la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica&#8221;. Los restantes 25 a\u00f1os se explican por una mejora de factores sociales como el saneamiento, la higiene, y lo que \u00e9l denomina &#8220;las causas de las causas&#8221;. En otras palabras, nuestro bienestar general ser\u00e1 afectado de mayor forma por cambios en nuestros estilos de vida que a trav\u00e9s del desarrollo de nuevos medicamentos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Por esta misma v\u00eda, otros ponentes apoyaron la idea de hacer una clara distinci\u00f3n entre las condiciones que se pueden evitar y aquellas que requieren tratamientos m\u00e9dicos avanzados como la cirug\u00eda y las terapias farmacol\u00f3gicas. El Dr. Iv\u00e1n Oranski, Director Ejecutivo de Reuters Health, advirti\u00f3 sobre el peligro que representan el exceso de tratamientos y el gran n\u00famero de pacientes diagnosticados con enfermedades subcl\u00ednicas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Un reto dif\u00edcil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cuando usted se enfrenta a algo como el cambio de modos tradicionales de hacer las cosas, usted sabe que est\u00e1 frente a un reto grande. Si a esto le sumamos los fuertes intereses econ\u00f3micos que favorecen dichos puntos de vista, sabemos que las industrias de spa y wellness tendr\u00e1n que trabajar duro para poder entrar en el campo de la salud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A pesar de este duro desaf\u00edo, la conferencia TEDMED y otros foros celebrados recientemente en todo el mundo son una buena indicaci\u00f3n de que hay un di\u00e1logo creciente dentro de la industria de la salud sobre la necesidad de cambiar las cosas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Liz Terry piensa que deber\u00edamos centrarnos en la construcci\u00f3n de alianzas con diferentes actores de la industria de la salud y crear objetivos comunes junto a ellos.
