50. Sense Of Entitlement – Does It Really Serve Us?

Today I’d like to talk about something I’ve been noticing recently: sense of entitlement.

I don’t think this is something new – I think as humans we naturally veer towards that mindset, but I wonder if it really serves us.

The upside of the chaos we were thrown into over  the past few years has been how much importance wellness has gained.

Wellness is now considered that “tranversal” sector that nearly every industry wants a stake in to ensure their businesses are still relevent.

Which is great news for us wellness leaders.

However, the downside of our industry gaining such strong traction and growth is complacency and entitlement – the less desirable traits that arise during ‘good  times’ and success (both lousy teachers).

Are we ‘entitled’ to have a seat and voice at the big table (just because wellness is important)? Are we ‘entitled’ to have it easier (just because wellness is important)? And are we ‘entitled’ to be understood (just because wellness is important)?

Now, I’m not saying that we should NOT have that seat at the big table (and more importantly, that voice). Nor am I advocating for 15-hour shifts 7 days a week. And I’m definitely not saying that people should not know the basic notions of wellness.

What I’m challenging is whether feeling ‘entitled’ to all the above is really going to serve us to go from representing 1-3% of total hotel revenue to 50-60%.

I have my doubts.
